How to find your square footage

Accurate measurements help pressure washing pros price your job correctly the first time. Here's how to measure every common surface.

Measure twice

Double-check length and width at the longest points.

Break it up

Split odd shapes into rectangles and triangles, then add.

Round up

Round to the nearest 50 sq ft — better to overestimate slightly.

Driveways & walkways

Length × Width = Square feet
  1. 1Measure the longest length and widest width of the driveway in feet.
  2. 2Multiply length × width for rectangular driveways.
  3. 3For L-shaped or irregular driveways, split into rectangles, measure each, then add the areas together.
  4. 4Include walkways that will be cleaned in the same job.
Quick example: A 20 ft × 30 ft driveway = 600 sq ft

Decks & patios

Length × Width = Square feet
  1. 1Measure the full length and width of the deck or patio area.
  2. 2For multi-level decks, measure each level separately and add them.
  3. 3Include stairs by measuring the tread depth × width × number of steps.
  4. 4Don't forget covered portions if the ceiling needs washing too.
Quick example: A 16 ft × 12 ft deck = 192 sq ft

House siding & exterior walls

Width × Height = Square feet (per wall)
  1. 1Measure the width and height of each exterior wall that needs cleaning.
  2. 2Multiply width × height for each wall, then add all walls together.
  3. 3Subtract windows and doors only if they're large (optional — most pros quote by total wall area).
  4. 4Include garage doors and gables (triangular tops) in your total.
Quick example: A 40 ft wide × 10 ft tall house = 400 sq ft per side; 4 sides ≈ 1,600 sq ft

Roofs

(Base × Height) ÷ 2 = Square feet (per section)
  1. 1Roofs are tricky — measure the footprint (ground-level length and width), not the sloped surface.
  2. 2For simple gable roofs: measure length × width of the house footprint, then multiply by 1.2–1.4 to account for slope.
  3. 3For complex roofs, split into triangles and rectangles, calculate each, then add.
  4. 4When in doubt, estimate high — roof cleaning pricing is often based on story height and pitch.
Quick example: 30 ft × 40 ft footprint × 1.3 (average pitch) ≈ 1,560 sq ft

Fences

Length × Height = Square feet
  1. 1Measure the total linear feet of fencing to be cleaned.
  2. 2Multiply by the fence height (usually 4–8 ft).
  3. 3Double the area if both sides need cleaning (e.g., 100 ft × 6 ft × 2 sides = 1,200 sq ft).
  4. 4Gates and decorative sections can be measured with the main run — no need to be exact.
Quick example: 50 ft of 6 ft fence, both sides = 600 sq ft
